It's Fall Y'all!
That means pumpkin pies, cozy sweaters, crisp air and falling leaves all along the neighborhood. Maybe you've already dug out the Halloween decorations too!
Four years ago a brilliant idea was hatched to get businesses downtown to decorate the light poles in front of their businesses with goofy scarecrows. Since then, the friendly competition has grown into a wonderful downtown contest where the biggest winners of all are those who drive through and see how creative and fun our business owners can be. We are once again holding this contest, and this year we are keeping some of the best things about last years competition....
Rules for 2020 Scarecrow Contest:
1- Scarecrows must receive a number from the Chamber of Commerce to be entered into competition
2- Scarecrows must be tasteful and NOT political
3- Scarecrows must be up by October 15th and come down by November 2nd to make room for municipal company to put up Veteran's Day flags
4- Scarecrows will be judged by celebrity judges in one of three categories- Traditional, Scary and Industry
5- Winners will be announced on Halloween by noon
Winners in each category receive $100 Chamber Bucks!
Along with the Scarecrow Contest we are holding another selfie with a scarecrow random drawing as well. It's a super simple way to potentially win $20 in Chamber Bucks! All you have to do is visit downtown, or wherever your favorite scarecrow lives and take a selfie with him/her. Then take that photo and tag the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce (@cumberlandchamberofcommerce) in it when you post it to Facebook. You can also use the #CUMBERLANDSCARECROWS. We will take all the names of those who tagged the Chamber of Commerce with their scarecrow selfies and put them into a hat and draw out a winner. The winner will be announced at Noon on Halloween, so you have until 11:30AM, October 31st to get out and take check out the scarecrows!
Dress up them kiddos and get them out for a two hour candy filled excursion! Even the pandemic can't stop us from having a little family friendly fun in downtown. This year things will feel a little different, and certainly look a little different, but we felt it was really important not to cancel the annual safe trick-or-treat for the kids.
This year's safe trick-or-treat is Saturday, October 24th from Noon to 2PM . We know that it might have made more sense to do it on Halloween since that is a Saturday this year, but we thought it might be nice to give the young ones an extra weekend of fun and candy and allow parents more time to balance other Halloween obligations.
Please keep in mind these things when planning to come downtown:
1- Masks are encouraged, find a fun way to work it into your kids' costume!
2- Social distancing is encouraged as much as possible, we do understand that there are a lot of kids out that day, but try to keep your family unit close or come at non peak times (1PM-2PM)
3- There will be set directions for traffic flow. If you are on the Eastern side of Mainstreet (the old Kwik Trip side) please be headed North. If you are on the Western side of Mainstreet (the Municipal building side) please be headed South. We hope that this limits the amount of people you pass by and potentially come into contact with.
We hope that you feel safe coming downtown to celebrate this great Fall holiday with us. You can be assured that downtown businesses want to keep this community healthy and safe and will be taking their own precautions to ensure that health is the main priority. You can always voice your concerns with the Chamber of Commerce via telephone or email. We love to hear from the community on how to improve on our events!
